ARTIST STATEMENT

I grew up in Southern Maine where I spent summers combing the beaches for ‘treasures’ - a habit I continue today. My paintings reflect images from the coastline and gardens shaped by changing seasons, tides, light and shadows: washed-up buoys, rock ledges, pebbled beaches, seaweed, shells and gardens filled with flowers and vegetables.

The small assemblages are inspired by my stash of memorabilia.

MY PROCESS

I often have several different-sized paintings in progress. One day I work quickly, layering colors and textures, another day I’m intent on the finishing details. The works develop over time and evolve in the process. I mix colors the way I cook…throw it together and see how it looks…or tastes. Most of the time I like the results. If the color/recipe is hard to replicate, c’est la vie.

Recently I worked on 10 paintings. The 12x12’s are a throwback from a series I did 20 years ago while visiting various Maine locations. Fun to work photorealistically again. These Little Cranberry Island scenes inspired me and I loved working on them. Our family visits the Island every summer. My boys and I lived there in 83-85 when I taught in the one-room school. We have renewed friendships and the grandkids have established new relationships. Island living has a flavor of its own.
